Determination of essential oil concentration in cosmetics
The cosmetics industry requires information about the densities of various perfumes and aromas, as well as essential oil substrates. The densities of many different aromas, essential oils, and fragrances need to be determined to guarantee the quality control being aligned with the specifications on the packages. Essential oils are extracted from e.g. flowers etc. and are highly valuable. They are used in minor quantities in cosmetics to provide fragrance to cosmetics. Since essential oils are optically active, the polarimetric value can directly measure the content of specific essential oils using our polarimeter VariPol with small volume tubes. In combination with a refractometer the purity can be calculated automatically. When dissolved in alcohol the Schmidt + Haensch density meter can perform the analysis.
