Measuring DiEGME
Fuel system icing inhibitors are necessary in aviation fuels because of the low atmospheric temperature at flying altitudes. Substances like diethylene glycol monomethyl ether (DiEGME) are used to lower the fuel’s freezing point significantly. Schmidt + Haensch refractometers are used for the standard method (ASTM D5006) to measure the concentration of those icing inhibitors in aviation fuels.
